![]() However, there looks to have been a bug in the original Arduino version regarding two’s complements and the code on Github needs a slight patch to properly measure negative voltages. The few software libraries for the INA219 and i2c assume use with an Arduino, but some dude over on Github did a nice Python port of the INA219/i2c library. For the most part it was painless and simple, enable the i2c kernel module and the three INA modules just showed up when I ran “i2cdetect -y 1”. Adafruit has a generous tutorial on how to connect and verify i2c is working. ![]() Also to power the INA modules themselves, another set of continuous jumpers connect Vcc and GND back to the 5v and GND pins of the Raspberry Pi. Two have solder junctions to set the i2c address, resulting in the three being accessible on the bus at 0x40, 0x41, and 0x44. Adafruit has some excellent tutorials on wiring up and working with the INA219, which is where I got the majority of my information.Įach of the INA219 modules speak i2c to the RPi and the SDA/SCL pins daisy-chained with continuous jumpers back to the respective i2c pins on the RPi (P3 and P5) to form an i2c bus. Working with the rest was relatively quick work. I personally insist on everything I have use Power Pole connectors so if one were less inclined they could avoid a lot of work. The bulk of my time was spent making a wiring harness for this setup to plug into my existing solar setup and soldering on all the connectors. They’re about 1″ square, have a terminal on the board for wiring in-line in electrical circuits to measure, and have a small shunt and chip that measures the voltage and current. Allegedly this setup should handle about 3 amps, although if somebody wants to do the arithmetic and make an appropriate shunt they should be able to measure much higher currents.Īt the heart of the setup are three INA219 (“high side DC current sensor”) modules from Adafruit which do the measuring, one each for the solar input, the battery, and load. The hardware and other bits, excluding the Pi, ran me around $50-$60. Here, the measurement modules are attached to a Raspberry Pi via i2c and a simple python script collects the data and sends it wirelessly to OpenTSDB for storage and charting. This new setup adds data recording+logging into the mix, something I’ve always wanted. At the time I settled on a Morningstar charge controller with LCD voltage meters to tell me. ![]() Ever since I started using solar power at Burning Man I wanted to get a good measure of how much I was consuming and how much was left. I’d appreciate any input to help a bit of a noob.Over a recent couple of weekends I built a thing to measure the current and voltage of the components of a 12V solar/PV power system. If it was the other way around I think I need an amplifier but I have no idea what it’s called the other way around. I just can’t quite work out how to do that. It’s a 12v battery that I need to check on so I think at most I need 0 - 20v. I’m struggling a bit with the voltage reading though. I will then use a couple of Spark Fun Current sensor breakouts(1568-1882-ND) to do the current reading. My plan (so far) is to connect an Ada Fruit 12bit ADC (1528-1014-ND) to my Pi, which looks fairly straightforward. I think I want to use a Raspberry Pi to do the logging (I have one and there seem to be several good tutorials online) and I think I want to get the data to the Pi via i2c. I’m looking for some advice (as the subject line suggests) on logging the current usage of two bits of kit and the voltage of a battery (and maybe some other things later on). Lastly, rub the wax a couple of times to ensure it sticks properly. Use your thumb or forefinger to press and smooth the ball of wax over the bracket or wire, in the area that is sore or causing you discomfort. Step 5: Apply the wax to the problematic area You should use just enough to cover the braces bracket or wire. It should easily pinch-off, then just roll it into a ball with your fingers for at least 5 seconds so it becomes soft. Open a new pack of braces wax and pull off a small amount (maybe start with 1/4 of an inch and use more if needed). To reduce bacteria build-up, brush and floss your teeth properly prior to wax application. To apply the wax, first scrub your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and dry them thoroughly. If there is still some wax on your braces, gently use a toothpick to remove the old wax before applying any more. Orthodontists usually apply mouth wax after fitting braces as a preventative measure, but it will come loose over time. If not, you can always buy one from your dentist or a pharmacy. ![]() You can find out your dental wax’s ingredients from the package or ask your orthodontist.Īfter fitting your braces, your orthodontist will give you a pack of essential supplies, and dental wax would ideally be included in it. Here’s a table that will give you an idea of the different orthodontic wax ingredients and their physical properties. Additives like resins, oils, fats, and colours are added to give the wax a smooth surface, which is exactly what you want when it comes to protecting your mouth from your braces. Most dental waxes contain almost 40–60% paraffin (by weight). Natural waxes are obtained from sources like plants or animals, whereas synthetic waxes are lab formulated from natural wax molecules in addition to other chemical elements. Some people have even been known to use it with their clear aligners to help make the edges more comfortable, although do check with your dentist first if you are considering this as it may cause them to sit differently.Įssentially, orthodontic wax is an organic compound of fatty acids that are derived from natural or synthetic components or a blend of both. It is most commonly associated with metal braces, but you can use it with any type of braces including clear, ceramic, self-ligating and even lingual braces. Orthodontic wax is a special type of wax that you can put on your braces to help stop them from rubbing on your cheeks, gums and mouth and causing irritation and pain. The following table is a summary of the orthodontic wax products we will discuss in this article:ĭental wax provides relief to people with metal You can use it in very small quantities to cover brackets and protruding wires and provide a barrier to protect your mouth. That is when dental wax can help ease your discomfort. These tiny cuts and abrasions inside your mouth may not be noticeable right away, but constant irritation can get uncomfortable quickly. But unfortunately, because they are made from metal, they can damage sensitive gum and mouth tissue. But don't worry, it's perfectly normal! Dental wax is specifically meant for braces and is safe to be used on your teeth and in your mouth.īraces are great for straightening your teeth and aligning your bite to give you a more confident smile. ![]() Your orthodontist may have suggested using wax for your dental braces which you might think sounds a little bit strange. If you wear fixed braces and are suffering from sore and irritated cheeks and gums from the brackets and wires, you may need orthodontic wax. I was amazed at how much more detail Photo AI brought out of the image, but here is the image in web size to show you that the color is all completely intact. To check a wider color palette, I also processed a recent image from Okunikko of a patch of Autumn leaves on the side of a mountain. Sharp Snow Monkey and Yellow Monkey Okunikko Autumn Color Although it’s obvious, the offending DNG is the one in the bottom right. Flying Snow Monkey!Īnd to show you what has been fixed, here is the screenshot from the April episode showing the color cast in the DNG file that I saved and reviewed in Capture One Pro at the time. Topaz Photo AI is amazing! Here is the final photo for your reference. They have earned my trust by fixing this issue, so I’m completely sold. Topaz let themselves down by leaving that unfixed despite it being pointed out to them by many people. What’s more, I saved the image as a DNG and imported it back into Capture One Pro, and there is no trace of the nasty color cast that led me to request a refund in April! This is amazing! I’m pleased that this works as it should now. Snow Monkey Sharpened in Topaz Photo AI No More Color Cast! This is one of those images that had bugged me since shooting it, due to the subject movement, but Photo AI has completely turned that around. Here is another screenshot showing the face of the monkey, and again, I’m sure you’ll agree that there is a huge improvement in the sharpness. I’m sure you’ll agree that the sharpness of the foot is incredible! Photo AI has completely removed the motion blur and cleaned up the snow on the monkey’s fur. Snow Monkey Sharpened FootĬlick on the image to open the full-sized screenshot to explore the detail. Here is a screenshot showing the settings I enabled and a before-after of the foot of the monkey, which showed a bit of motion blur from the monkey’s movement. Unlike the previous suite, which had various tools for various objectives, Photo AI has all of the main tools rolled into one application, making it way less cumbersome to use. OK, so I just opened the main offending image from my April tests, of a young snow monkey galloping along the side of a snowy mountain, and processed it in Topaz Photo AI. Now let’s test to see if my other images are still getting that color cast when processed and saved in DNG format. I cropped around 10% of the image away to give a slightly larger view of the moon. ![]() I shot this image with the Canon EOS R5 and my 100-500mm RF lens with the RF 2.0X Extender fitted for a focal length of 1000mm. I forfeited a little detail in the moon, but the noise destroyed most of the detail anyway, so I’m pretty happy with the result. ![]() I’ll have to put up with saving my images as TIFF files when the color cast does cause issues.Īnyway, first here is the photo that I shot of the Lunar Eclipse with Uranus (I said Neptune in the recording – sorry!) sitting diagonally down in the bottom left thirds intersection. This time though, even if I do see the issue again, I’m going to keep the software, as it’s so good. I was not yet convinced that they had solved their problems with saving as DNG files, though, so today, I’m going to share the Lunar Eclipse shot that I processed with Topaz Photo AI, and then we’ll move on to do a few more tests to see if the problem still exists. It looked pretty good, and I could not see any color casts, so I was happy with my purchase and somewhat relieved to have that Topaz magic back in my digital toolbox. You can’t save your images with the trial license, though, so I bought a license and saved my image as a DNG file. So a few nights ago, after shooting the very dark Lunar Eclipse at ISO 3200, leaving me with a fair bit of noise to clean up, I tried Topaz Photo AI, using a trial license, and was once again amazed at how well it dealt with the noise in my image. Since that review, though, I have, on several occasions, missed the pretty amazing noise reduction that the Topaz tools provided. In April this year, I tried the Topaz Labs suite of tools and ended up requesting a refund because there were some nasty color casts in the DNG files that Topaz created after I processed some raw files from my Canon EOS cameras and viewed them in Capture One Pro. ![]() Nobody knows if these shadows were somehow engineered, since Pitusiray doesn’t appear to have been carved, yet the shadows are apparently unmistakable. These shadows take many forms, including that of an Inca warrior, being consumed by a puma (the puma being an important totem in Andean cosmology). Mount Pitusiray is considered to be a solar clock of sorts, and for three days per year, as the sun rises over the peak of Pitusiray, it casts a set of dynamic shadows on the peak behind it. But at the end of September each year, for just three days, Mount Pitusiray is is overrun with people. On this particular May day we had the place to ourselves. Either way, it’s very high (and at night, it’s very cold – consider yourself warned). The actual height of Pitusiray is debatable I’ve seen figures from 4,990-5,400+ metres above sea level. The Shadows of Pitusiray – a Major Mystery and Attraction Seeing that I like full-circle experiences, to both start and end this Peruvian chapter of my life with these two people, trekking in the mountains, seemed nothing short of the sort of poetry I’ve come to expect out of life. (See also: Apprenticeship Update: BIG Changes for The Professional Hobo). And although Miguel isn’t going anywhere, both Laura and I have departed Peru (in different directions, for different reasons), and we’re not sure if we’ll ever meet in Peru again. Over the last couple of years (and hikes), Laura and Miguel and I became great friends. Mount Pitusiray was great for a variety of reasons, not the least of which was that it would be the last hike that I would share with my friend Laura, and our guide Miguel. Almost 2.5 years prior when I arrived in Peru, we three met and shared our first trek together, to Machu Picchu. But my overnight trip to Mount Pitusiray ended up being one of the best treks yet. (I’ve listed a selection of hikes I’ve written about at the end of this post). It's just LDAP.īut Apple still walks around Microsoft like they'e stepping on egg shells, and for the life of me I can't figure why. It could still be a lot better and a lot simpler. Active Directory is probably the best thing Microsoft ever did, got it the most right of all endeavors. Then when Apple Office becomes ubiquitous because it's so much cheaper and so much better than Microsoft, replace Microsoft's backend Exchange servers with Apple appliance hardware that doesn't need any administration other than adding and deleting users/groups, etc., and a plugin replacement for Office365 (am I the only one that thinks this is a clunky monstrosity?) back at Apple data centers, and not quite cut out all Microsoft with Apple alternatives that just work better, but allow any Poindexters to continue to run Windows and MS Office Suite and still integrate seamlessly. Apple should have an application on iDevices that provides office word processing, office mail, office spreadsheet, office telephony, all the office apps in one app that looks like a desktop, such that with BT keyboard and smallish 1080p monitor (actually I'd prefer 1024x768) would replace all the non-power users', non-developer desktops (secretaries, customer support, VPs, etc.), save offices a bundle of money on hardware, and beat Microsoft at it's own game without killing Microsoft's Office environment, yet. Idky Apple doesn't just take over the office, interface their software and devices with Exchange and Office365 and Active-Directory more cleanly and more stably than Microsoft can. ![]() Maybe with those out of the way, they will have time to focus on the core experience again, motivated by new competition in the space. My hope is that the team has simply been so swamped with cloud features and iOS/iPadOS parity over the last few years that they haven't been able to prioritize big changes. Allowing users to apply styles between existing docs (a la Google Docs) would as well. Making bulleted lists drop dead simple to create (and well formatted by default) would go a long way. Despite the steady stream of small updates, Apple hasn't fixed important, longstanding bugs with their software (e.g., inaccurate table of contents ordering relative to actual document content, styles not always applied when you select them), and they have not fixed significant usability issues (lack of the ability to update a document's style based on some other style, lack of any coherent bullet feature that relates to a style, lack of rich conditional formatting options in Numbers, very limited shortcuts for styles) in the ~15 years I've been using iWork. However, my observation is that the products have stagnated. I do follow along with these updates as a regular Pages and Numbers user.
